Simple Prawn Spinner

A prawn in combination with a spinner makes a very versatile bait. It can be fished slowly or quickly and draws strikes under a wide range of water conditions. You’ll need a Pro-Cure Bait Threader for threading prawns and because each bait has to be threaded, tie some extra leaders and rig a few baits. When you’re ready to change, cut the leader off and tie on a fresh bait. For this rig I use a #2 treble tied with an egg loop on 20- to 25-pound leader.
1. Start with your tied leader, prawn and threader.
2. Thread the prawn between the eyes and carefully through the body, exiting just short of the tail.
3. Position the shank of the treble hook right between the prawn’s eyes and snug it up in there.
4. Place a half hitch around the tail (you need this to hold the pressure of the spinner blade). Add enough beads to insure the spinner blade is well off the prawn’s body (too close and neither the prawn or the blade will spin consistently). Add a plastic clevis and blade. Put a rubber band (Bob’s Bait Wraps or dental band) or two on the prawn’s head to keep it in tact.
Position everything and set it in the water carefully. Both the blade and prawn should spin when trolled. Sometimes the prawn doesn’t want to spin with this rig and only wants to rock back and forth. This works too but I like to reposition the half hitch to get full rotations from the prawn. If you use a high-quality treble hook, you’ll get a great hook-to-land ratio from this rig.
